The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The Goals interconnect and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that we achieve each Goal and target by 2030.

How We Are Meeting These Rules:

  • Goal 1: No Poverty
  • Goal 2: Zero Hunger
  • Goal 3: Good health and well-being
  • Goal 4: Quality Education
  • Goal 5: Gender Equality
  • Goal 6: Clean Water & Sanitation
  • Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
  • Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities

Prior to The Butterfly Tree’s involvement there were no facilities for children needing special education in these remote villages. In 2010 we added a unit to Mukuni Basic School, the first in Zambia. In 2013 one to Riverview school, and in 2014 two further units were opened at Katapazi and Simango schools. Between 2015-16 we funded a substantial amount of educational development. These include the addition of 6 classrooms, 2 teacher’s houses, bore holes and latrines at N’gandu School, two classroom blocks, a teacher’s house and latrines for Sinsimuku.

We have constructed eight entire new community and primary schools at Matengu, Silelo, Malima, N’dele, Sibbulo, Bunsanga, Muyunda, Malombe, Katubya, Simukumbwa, Namachele, Chabalanda. Many more schools have been advanced. There were no secondary schools in the area, and the majority of pupils could not afford to go to boarding school once they had completed grades seven and nine. We opened Mukuni Secondary School in 2007, and added four boarding shelters, which accommodate 75 pupils from outreach villages. We subsequently developed a high school and Riverview and Nguba and added in substantial amount in infrastructure to Musokotwane secondary and a science laboratory for Nyawa.

Sustainability & Community Resilience Projects

Major projects we have donated to

Farming and agriculture are very much in demand, hence we have initiated a number of sustainable enterprises for women and youths, including these with physical and mental health challenges. These include chicken and goat rearing, agricultural projects, vegetable growing and beekeeping.

2026

We have repaired two broken water systems for Mukuni Village and Secondary school. Further advanced seven women’s food security projects.

2025

The Butterfly Tree drilled more boreholes in schools, at a health centre and for communities in Kazungula and Kalomo Districts. We also advanced the women’s and community food security projects.

2024

The Butterfly Tree successfully drilled 30 boreholes and installed 8 solar-powered water reticulations systems during the worst drought in Zambia’s history, cause by El Niño. These have not only provided safe drinking water but a source of water to irrigate vegetable gardens for food production. Among the boreholes that were drilled were four for women’s food security projects at Zwanga, Kanchele, Zalu and Sekute Central. Solar-powered water systems were added. The crops and vegetables grown by the women provided nutritious food for their families, generated an income and helped people within their communities who were suffering from severe hunger.

2023

Boombe Lyangoma school and five communities received boreholes. These were: Siamabele, Musokotwane, Mukuni Senkobo. Sadly, the borehole we drilled for Kauwe Rural Health Centre was dry.

2022

The Butterfly Tree drilled boreholes for Simukombo and James Siatchema schools, Hamoomba and Namyola communities and for a new health post at Mabwa. A food security project for women in Senkobo was initiated.

2021

Nzizo school and Nampaka community received boreholes and in 2022 Simukombo, James Siatchema and Mabwe schools as well as a community in Mukuni are benefitting from the addition of boreholes. These facilities help schools to produce sufficient food for their feeding programmes with surplus produce being sold to the communities. Profits will then be put back into the school to provide textbooks and orphan support.

2020

We donated six water reticulation systems to schools in order for them to access water for irrigation during the dry season: River View, Katapazi, Musokotwane, Singwamba, Matengu and Chaba. Five schools were given boreholes.

Our focus is to continue creating sustainable projects for schools and communities.
